PORTRAIT OF A WITCH
Amelia Steinbeck is seen as a somewhat severe and dry-humored, but kind high school teacher at Blackgale High School in the town of Blackgale, California. The town residents view her with some bemusement due to her stubbornness, blunt nature, and willingness to get things done. There are whispers about how she may be more than what she seems; what is a single woman doing, living alone after all?
Their curiosity is not far off. Amelia is a witch of great power who for the time being is living a quiet life in the Blackgale and extending her magical help where she can. She's been there longer than most people realize.
Her story begins several decades ago...
THE STRANGER
Once upon a time, there was a little girl.
Amelia Steinbeck was a six-year-old girl living in America during the 1940s. She had good parents, a safe home, and perhaps even a bright future ahead of her.
This ordinary existence was cut short when one day in the park while reading a book, a mysterious red-headed man approached her to ask one question:
"Do you want to be a witch?"
The seemingly innocent question intrigued the young Amelia who accepted the stranger's offer recklessly. And as fate would have it, the mysterious Red Head was none other than, the Witch King who was less human and more of an otherworldly force from which all magical phenomena originated in the world. Both the magical brethren he helped create and espers around the globe fear him immensely for he comes and goes as he pleases, using this one world as his playground to impose his will upon. Though humankind and their cultures and traditions have deviated over the centuries, his influence is permanent and his presence immutable.
And unfortunately for the very normal, very human little girl, he became fixated on her as his new side project.
Day by day, the Witch King would gradually distance Amelia from her parents and their memories of their daughter began to fade. The young Amelia was enchanted and distracted by the magical arts and arcane knowledge that slowly changed her from human to witch. By the time she realized how long she was spending away from her family and asked the Witch King to release her... It was too late. The Witch King told her in no uncertain terms that, she was his and that she had so much more to learn.
AS I LAY DYING
Amelia continued her studies under the tutelage of her teacher, their home tucked away in some dimension, a world surrounded by snowy landscapes and constant blizzards. She doesn't particularly like talking about this period in her life. While her basic needs were met, The Witch King kept her socially isolated (there were a few visitors here and there, but none who could or would help her from her plight) with nothing else to do but focus on refining her abilities as a witch. Time barely had any meaning to either of them and Amelia barely noticed that decades were passing by. She lived in fear of her mentor who stretched her mind to take on more arcane and even eldritch knowledge, often pushing her mental and physical limits.
Her one refuge and window to the outside world was in literature. The Witch King allowed her to peruse his library and would often gift her more for her leisure time. As the years passed, books were the only things that gave Amelia insight into what was happening in the non-magic world, which she viewed with disdain, envy, and longing. She would study a wide variety of subjects through these books and while her knowledge grew, her body stopped growing as did her heart.
Against all odds, Amelia persisted and survived. Every trial pushed onto her by the Witch King, she would figure her way out and resolve using the magic that was granted to her. She clung to the thought of returning home or at least returning to something better than her current situation no matter what.
BRAVE NEW WORLD
Forty years later, the Witch King got bored and left Amelia to her own devices dropping her back into the previous world he had taken her from. She cautiously took her first steps back only to find that while she remained youthful, everyone and everything she knew had changed, shocking her greatly. For the next ten years, Amelia would watch humans from afar trying to catch up with several decades of history. She would eventually settle down in the town of Blackgale, taking up residence in one of the Witch King's old haunts.
By this time, Amelia had the body of a sixteen-year-old girl despite the passing of fifty years. She was no longer a human, but a witch, a sad and resigned creature of the Witch King's own custom design whose mind and body hit a wall of what it was able to do. She could not connect with other human beings on a fundamental level after all the suffering she had endured, only looking at their lives and history as passively as stories on a page of a book.
BELOVED
Not knowing what to do with her life, she decided to enroll in the local high school in Blackgale in order to pass the time rather than having any long-term plan for her long-lived existence. Amelia fabricated a backstory and her paperwork in order to blend in with the town and hide her mysterious existence. Along the way, some unique individuals entered her life who were able to connect with her. There was Michael DeRosiers a confident if cocky warlock, Adam Walsh an occult enthusiast, and Berna Oakes, a long-lived and larger than life witch. Though they all approached her casually, the reclusive Amelia who had no idea how to handle even this small amount of attention from anyone other than the Witch King, pushed away these attempts at friendship. It took an otherworldly being to bring out her inner humanity that had been stunted for so long.
One day, the Witch King gifted Amelia a peculiar object, specifically a "Flower" both a literal (it was in the form of a rose) and an alien object of interest. "Flowers" are extensions of individual deities who are planted on this Earth to gain a foothold in the world and spread their influence, to go directly against the Witch King. He intercepted this Flower and on a whim, gave it to Amelia.
Due to a mishap with her magical energies, while studying the Flower, the rose grew giant and birthed a humanoid figure. Unsure of what to do, Amelia gave them the name Briar (will be referred to as he/them from this point on) and kept him close by to study.
Briar was a being full of potent energy that surpassed hers greatly, but their body was more of a conduit for it all. More importantly, Amelia found herself saddled with a new roommate whose outlook and behaviors contrasted greatly against hers. Briar was much more curious about the environment around them, eager to explore, and had great empathy and emotional resonance with other people. The witch steadily found herself going along with Briar's desires and they both became more involved with the Blackgale townspeople's lives. They also were able to bridge the gap between Amelia and Michael, Adam, and Berna, creating some solid bonds that would last her a lifetime.
For the first time in many, many years, Amelia's heart began to thaw out, all thanks to Briar who drew out her humanity that had been stamped down and made her small and afraid. Her magic was a curse, but now she could see the possibility of carving out her own path without fear and she wanted to walk that path with him, her first love.
Unfortunately, witches do not get conventional happy endings.
Being a Flower, the deity that Briar originated from (dubbed the Hive of Thorns) landed in their location and began to spread its influence throughout Blackgale. The normal humans found themselves suffering delusions, coughing up clots of flowers growing from their bodies and blood, and those who were most susceptible had their inner darkness change the fabric of reality into a hellish nightmare-scape. Amelia and her friends fought to clear out the Hive's presence but it nearly proved futile; Briar, as its extension was about to be reabsorbed for the power that had been stored in his body over the 1000 years that he slept on Earth.
But Briar, in the short time he had lived in the body granted by Amelia, had grown to love the world and loved her most of all. In order to stand a chance against the Hive of Thorns, Briar gave up the magic in his body to the witch so that they would not be taken in by their origin. Amelia was able to make one last push against the Hive of Thorns and defeated one of the most major threats to the world.
She felt no glory and no joy at her victory even though her power and infamy grew as a result of this incident. Briar's sacrifice had nearly broken her spirit because she believed she would never find anyone else who could love her or stay by her side as he had. Briar, however, had made sure she was not alone this time in her grief. Her friends and the townspeople who appreciated her presence in their lives gave her the witch a renewed sense of purpose for her life moving forward.
PRESENT DAY, 10 YEARS LATER
Amelia grew into an adult body, finished her high school studies, graduated college, and completed her path to being a high school teacher as soon as possible, much to the bafflement of those in the supernatural world. Her reasoning for her choices is simple; to live because Briar wanted her to be and to become a better person than she was before. She would make sure her life was full of experiences that she could bring help and healing to those around her to the best of her abilities.
She doesn't know what else lies ahead for her, but she refuses to let fear freeze her up again. So even if it's painful, even if it's frustrating, the Emerald Witch makes sure that the world that Briar loved can last a little longer.

Canon Abilities/Powers:
MAGIC — All magickind are born with this energy that helps them perform the impossible, unlike psychics whose powers perform within limits. The way magic manifests is a broad subject in itself. Some witches may choose to specialize and focus on certain aspects, while others will continue their learning and learn all types of arcane arts and eldritch languages. Amelia has 1000 years' worth of very potent magical energy within her thanks to Briar, giving her the potential to tear paths to other worlds and upend reality itself. Since she's basically a container for so much magic in comparison to her actual age, her hair strands act as multiple channels for it to flow through (and she'll use said strands for different spells). Magic slows down the aging of witches and wizards as well. Amelia's magic energy is bright emerald green.
ENVISIONING — This is the basic principle that all magickind go by to cast magic. Envisioning is the ability to create phenomena and impose one's will upon reality. By creating an image in one's mind, it is unlocked and manifests through channeled energy to cast the spell or summon what one desires. Ideally, the more magic energy you have, the higher the accuracy and quality of your casting will be. For further effectiveness, a practitioner must study arcane and otherworldly languages that can contradict or manipulate their reality which reflects itself as runic-like script. You can think of it as rewriting the code of whatever universe the witch/warlock is in to perform their arts. She has such an excess of magical energy that she stores it in her hair.
TEA FORTUNE TELLING — Also known as tasseography, or divination from patterns in tea leaves or in coffee grounds. In Amelia's case, she drinks tea, and the leftover tea leaves form an image. She only recently started dabbling in this sort of magic, just for kicks and most of the foresight she gains is equivalent to that of a fortune cookie. Technically an impractical, but amusing use of magic that may or may not ring true at times.
KICKBOXING — On a more mundane note, Amelia does have some basic kickboxing moves, but more for working out and maintaining a healthy physique and as a stress release. It does help in a pinch when she needs to punch or kick something as a surprise attack, but her strength and speed are average at best unless she enhances her physical abilities with magic.
Other things of note is that she's very studious and booksmart. Ask her about books, she'll talk about books.
